Trinity Health, St. Mary’s plan $100 million expansion across Northeast Georgia
July 28, 2026Athens, Ga. – St. Mary’s Health Care System (St. Mary’s) and its parent ministry, Trinity Health, have committed to adding nearly $100 million in new facilities, services and equipment in the next two years to meet the growing healthcare needs of Northeast Georgia.
“Our 2026 expansion represents the largest investment in facilities, services and equipment that St. Mary’s has made since its founding 120 years ago,” said Stonish Pierce, President and CEO of Trinity Health Georgia. “We are laser-focused on enhancing access to cardiovascular and neurological care, as well as enhancing access to primary care providers, medical specialists, pharmacy services and wound care.”
Pierce said the expansions are necessary to meet rising demand from the region’s growing population, especially life-saving and life-improving care for the fast-growing older adult demographic.
“Medical science has advanced tremendously in recent years, and we can now do more than ever to protect and restore the health of people at risk of heart attack, stroke, aneurysm, cancer and many other conditions,” Pierce said. “The level of need in our communities has risen to the extent that we are challenged on a nearly daily basis to handle the volume efficiently. Our national health ministry, Trinity Health, agreed that our region needs better access to these critical services, and that investing in our communities is vital for the continued health and well-being of those we serve.”
Major components of the expansion include:
St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Pavilion:
- A 42,000-square-foot, 3-story pavilion at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Greensboro that will house primary and specialty care physician offices and a new, larger home for services such as outpatient rehabilitation and infusion therapy that have outgrown their current facilities. Moving these functions out of the current facility will enable expansion of existing services and the launch of cardiac rehab services in Greensboro.
- In conjunction with the start of the project, St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation announced the launch of a $10 million community fundraising campaign to maximize the impact of the new pavilion. Combined with Trinity Health’s $35.6 million commitment, the Pavilion will represent a $45.6 million investment in the health of the greater Greene County region.
- Construction has started, and completion is expected in 2027.
St. Mary’s Center for Heart, Vascular and Neurosciences:
- An addition to St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens providing 15,000 square feet of space for expanding heart, vascular and neurological services. The addition, to be constructed on top of the existing Emergency Department and Outpatient Surgical Center on the west side of the hospital, will feature dedicated new space for cardiac electrophysiology and neurovascular intervention.
- Complementing the capital investment for the Center for Heart, Vascular and Neurosciences, St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation is leading a $3 million philanthropic campaign to help ensure the center reaches its fullest potential and maximizes community impact. This campaign, combined with Trinity’s commitment, will total nearly $35 million when completed.
- Construction has started, and completion is anticipated in fall 2027.
St. Mary’s Medical Group at Presbyterian Village:
- A new, 20,000 square-foot medical office building on Hog Mountain Road near Presbyterian Village to provide space in which to expand St. Mary’s Medical Group practices (Georgia Family Medicine, Endocrine Specialists of Athens, and St. Mary’s Neurological Specialists), which, in turn, will provide space for the expansion of services on nearby Daniells Bridge Road.
- Construction is underway with opening set for fall 2026. Estimated cost: $13.6 million.
Additional MRI Suite:
- A second MRI suite at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens to expand access to imaging services and help ensure timely MRI services for inpatients and emergency department patients. This project included building a 2,100-square-foot expansion that converted a parking area under the hospital’s Family Birth Center into an enclosed part of the Imaging Center.
- The MRI suite opened in January 2026. Total cost: about $3.5 million.

- St. Mary’s Hospital Community Pharmacy in Athens (now open)
- New St. Mary’s Medical Group practices: St. Mary’s Family Medicine, St. Mary’s Gastroenterology Associates, and St. Mary’s Orthopedic Specialists (now open)
- Creation of ArrIVe Infusion Center at Malcom Bridge Road in Oconee County (now open)
- Creation of a wound healing center with hyperbaric oxygen chambers at St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital in Lavonia (now open)
- Enhancements to St. Mary’s Center for Wound Healing on the Atlanta Highway (completed)
