Compassionate Guidance for One of the Most Personal Parts of Parenthood
Feeding your baby is one of the first ways you bond and one of the most personal decisions you’ll make as a new parent. At St. Mary’s Family Birth Center and St. Mary’s Sacred Heart Hospital Mother/Baby Unit, we believe there’s no one “right” way to feed your baby, only what’s right for you and your growing family.
If you choose to breastfeed, know this: you’re not alone. Our certified lactation consultants and nursing staff are here to support you with knowledge, patience, and encouragement, especially if you encounter problems.
Whether you’re preparing to breastfeed for the first time, looking for reassurance after a tough start, or simply want to know what support is available, we’re here to help you feed your baby with confidence.
Why Breastfeeding Support Matters
Breastfeeding is natural, but that doesn’t mean it’s always easy. Many new parents experience challenges like:
- Trouble with latching or positioning
- Concerns about milk supply
- Sore or cracked nipples
- Questions about pumping, storage, and feeding schedules
- Emotional ups and downs as your body and baby adjust
With the right guidance and encouragement, most challenges can be overcome, and that’s where our expert support makes all the difference.
Meet Your Lactation Support Team
At St. Mary’s, our team includes International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) and experienced postpartum nurses trained in breastfeeding support. We offer:
- Baby nutrition classes before you deliver
- One-on-one bedside assistance right after delivery
- Personalized feeding plans based on your goals and needs
- Help with latching on, positioning, and comfort
- Guidance on pumping and milk storage
- Ongoing support after discharge, including follow-up visits and phone consultations
Our goal is simple: to empower you with the knowledge and tools to make informed choices, without pressure or judgment.
In-Hospital Support for Breastfeeding
Your lactation journey begins right after birth, with:
- Skin-to-skin contact immediately after delivery (when medically appropriate)
- Assistance with the baby’s first latch
- Ongoing guidance throughout your stay in our private, family-centered suites
- Support for both exclusive breastfeeding and combination feeding plans
We also support rooming-in, which helps build your feeding rhythm, increases bonding, and allows for early signs of hunger to be met with ease.
After You Go Home: We’re Still Here for You
Support doesn’t stop once you leave the hospital. Many parents need help in the days and weeks after birth as feeding patterns change and babies grow.
We offer:
- Postpartum lactation consultations (in-person or by phone)
- Help with pumping and returning to work
- Support for milk supply concerns or mastitis
- Referrals to community support groups or additional specialists as needed
You’re never expected to figure it out alone. We’re here to walk with you, celebrate your wins, and problem-solve together.
What If I Can’t or Don’t Breastfeed?
While breastfeeding has many benefits, it’s not the only way to nourish and love your baby. If breastfeeding isn’t possible or is not your preferred option, we support you fully.
Our providers can help you:
- Choose the right formula feeding plan
- Combine formula and breastfeeding, if needed
- Navigate emotional feelings around feeding choices
- Feel confident that you’re doing what’s best for your baby and yourself
Fed is best. Loved is everything. We’re here for all families.
