What You’ll See on a Birth Center Tour

What You’ll See on a Birth Center Tour

Your tour of the St. Mary’s Family Birth Center is more than just a walk-through; it’s a chance to experience the care and comfort we provide to every family.

During your visit, you’ll explore:

  • Private Labor and Delivery Suites – Spacious, calming rooms designed for your comfort, equipped with medical technology and space for your support person.
  • Postpartum Rooms – Where you’ll recover and bond with your baby after delivery.
  • Nursery and Newborn Areas – Including a look at our Level II NICU, in case your baby ever needs additional care.
  • Waiting Areas and Family Spaces – Warm, welcoming spaces for your loved ones to gather.
  • Nursing Stations and Care Team Spaces – Meet the nurses and team who’ll be supporting you throughout your stay.

Seeing the space in advance helps reduce anxiety and gives you a clearer picture of what your delivery day might feel like.

What Questions Should You Ask During the Tour?

Tours are the perfect time to ask questions and gather information about your care preferences. Consider bringing a notepad or using your phone to jot down key answers.

Helpful questions include:

  • What are my options for pain relief during labor?
  • Can I move around or labor in different positions?
  • Who can be in the room with me during delivery?
  • What happens if I need a C-section?
  • Can my baby stay with me in the room?
  • How does your team support breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact?
  • What is your policy for visitors during and after birth?
  • What kind of care does the NICU provide, and when is it used?
  • What should I bring with me on delivery day?
  • How do I pre-register or complete paperwork ahead of time?

Your tour guide is happy to answer any questions; no question is too small.

How to Prepare for Your Tour

How to Prepare for Your Tour

  1. Schedule early! We recommend touring the center around your 28–32 week mark, but you can come earlier or later based on your needs.
  2. Bring your partner or support person. It’s helpful for them to see the space and know what to expect.
  3. Wear comfortable shoes you may walk or stand for part of the tour.
  4. Start your birth plan. If you haven’t yet, touring the space may help you think through preferences like lighting, music, or delivery positions.
  5. Pre-register for delivery. Many families take care of this during or right after their tour to make delivery day smoother.
