Taking care of your health means staying informed and proactive, including understanding when and why to schedule a mammogram. At St. Mary’s Health Care System, we know that the idea of a mammogram can bring up a mix of emotions. That’s why we’re here to walk you through the process with care, clarity, and compassion.

Why Mammograms Matter

Why Mammograms Matter

Mammograms are one of the best tools we have for detecting breast cancer early, sometimes even before symptoms appear. Early detection greatly increases the chances of successful treatment and can save lives.

A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray that allows doctors to look for changes in breast tissue. It can spot tumors too small to be felt and identify other changes that might indicate cancer.

When Should You Start Getting Mammograms?

The right time to start getting mammograms can depend on your age and individual risk factors. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Women at average risk should begin yearly mammograms at age 40.
  • Women at higher risk (due to family history, genetics, or other factors) may need to begin screening earlier, sometimes as early as age 30.

Your St. Mary’s primary care provider can help assess your risk and recommend the best screening schedule for you.

What Happens During a Mammogram?

If you’ve never had a mammogram before, it’s normal to feel nervous. Here’s what to expect:

  1. You’ll stand in front of a special X-ray machine.
  2. A technician will place one breast at a time between two plates.
  3. The plates gently compress the breast tissue for a few seconds to get a clear image.
  4. The process is repeated from different angles for both breasts.

While it may feel a bit uncomfortable, it should only last a few seconds. The entire appointment usually takes about 20 minutes.

What If the Results Show Something?

Not all findings mean cancer. Sometimes, additional imaging is needed to get a better look. If something abnormal is found, your doctor will walk you through the next steps, which might include further imaging or a biopsy.
