- You suddenly have more swelling, tenderness, or redness in your affected limb
- Your affected limb becomes hot to the touch
- Your wound suddenly gets worse
Conditions We Treat
Our wound healing centers specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of complex, non-healing wounds. We serve patients with a wide range of wound types and underlying health conditions.
- Chronic non-healing wounds (wounds that haven’t improved after 4 weeks)
- Diabetic foot ulcers – a common and serious complication of diabetes
- Venous ulcers – often due to poor blood flow in the legs (chronic venous insufficiency)
- Arterial ulcers – typically caused by restricted blood supply to the extremities
- Pressure injuries (bedsores) – due to prolonged pressure, especially in those with limited mobility
- Post-surgical wounds that are slow to close or show signs of infection
- Traumatic wounds from accidents or injuries
- Radiation wounds – tissue damage that occurs after cancer treatment
- Infected or ischemic wounds
Early and proactive treatment of these conditions can prevent limb loss, reduce infection risks, and improve healing times. Our team works closely with your referring provider or primary care physician to ensure coordinated care from start to finish.

Advanced Wound Care Services
Healing a chronic wound often requires more than topical care. At St. Mary’s, we combine advanced technologies with proven clinical practices to promote wound healing from the inside out.
These cutting-edge treatments use living cells, growth factors, or skin substitutes to regenerate tissue and promote healing in wounds that are resistant to traditional care. These biologic dressings or grafts help stimulate the body’s natural ability to repair itself, particularly useful for patients with diabetic ulcers, venous leg ulcers, or arterial wounds.
Also known as wound vacuum, this method uses a gentle vacuum pump and specialized dressing to remove excess fluid from the wound, reduce swelling, and encourage healthy tissue growth. NPWT is often recommended for large, deep, or infected wounds, especially after surgery or trauma.
This specialized technique involves applying a cast that evenly distributes weight and pressure across the foot or leg, allowing chronic diabetic foot ulcers to heal while reducing the risk of further injury. Total contact casting is considered the gold standard for treating neuropathic ulcers caused by diabetes.
Available at both our Athens and Lavonia centers, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a powerful, non-invasive therapy that enhances the body's natural healing processes. Learn more below.
Spotlight on Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is an advanced medical treatment in which patients breathe 100% pure oxygen in a specially designed pressurized chamber. This increases the amount of oxygen in the blood plasma, delivering 15 to 20 times more oxygen to damaged tissues than normal breathing allows.
This oxygen-rich environment:
- Promotes new blood vessel growth
- Reduces inflammation and infection
- Speeds the repair of damaged or necrotic tissue
- Enhances the effectiveness of antibiotics
- Stimulates the body’s natural healing processes
Approved Medical Indications for HBOT Include:
- Diabetic foot ulcers (Wagner Grade III or worse)
- Radiation tissue damage (e.g., radiation cystitis, proctitis)
- Osteomyelitis (chronic bone infections)
- Skin grafts or flaps with compromised blood flow
- Crush injuries and acute traumatic wounds
- Gas gangrene and necrotizing soft tissue infections
- Carbon monoxide poisoning
- Air or gas embolism
- Decompression sickness (diving accidents)
- Acute arterial insufficiency
- Exceptional blood loss anemia
Each patient is evaluated by a board-certified physician specializing in hyperbaric medicine, who works in partnership with your primary care or referring doctor to coordinate a comprehensive care plan.
